You’re Using Social Media Wrong

I need to talk about something that’s annoying the shit out of me when it comes to brands using social media: Authenticity… or, the lack of it.


We live in a world where filters and facades dominate and what I think what sets the trues from the rest of everyone else is keeping real on social media. Being authentic online is like the secret sauce that makes the social media experience meaningful.

Here's why:

  1. Genuine Connections: When you're authentic, you attract like-minded people who share your interests, values, and quirks. These connections are far more rewarding than amassing a sea of superficial followers. Remember, quality trumps quantity!

  2. Trust Building: Authenticity builds trust. When you're honest and true to yourself, your audience is more likely to trust what you say, whether you're recommending a product or sharing a personal story.

  3. Embracing Imperfections: We all have our flaws and imperfections, and that's what makes us unique. Embracing these imperfections shows that you're human and relatable. It's a breath of fresh air in a world where perfection is often overrated.

  4. Inspiration and Positivity: Sharing your real experiences, challenges, and triumphs can inspire others. Your story might be just what someone needs to read, hear, or see to overcome their own hurdles.

  5. Longevity: Trends and fads come and go, but authenticity is timeless. If you're true to yourself, your online presence won't crumble when the latest trend fades away. You'll have a solid foundation.

In the design industry there are so many accounts that I see who are performative. They present themselves in unrealistic ways. Novices don’t understand that what they are seeing is a rehearsed dance… they believe it’s how true professionals create their works and sets unrealistic goals.

Being authentic doesn't mean you have to air your dirty secrets. It's about being true to yourself. So go ahead, post a bad design (and what you learned from it), share your accomplishments and setbacks, and most importantly, be you on your social media accounts. Your followers will thank you, and you'll thank yourself in the long run.
